HUNDREDS OF MOURNERS are gathering this afternoon for the funeral of Anastasia ‘Ana’ Kriegel.

Her family had requested that those who attend the civil service wear “sparkle and colour” and many dressed in bright clothing at Newlands Cross Cemetery and Crematorium.

“Ana loved sparkle and colour. The family wishes for the dress code to reflect this,” a notice on RIP.ie said.

The 14-year-old girl was killed shortly after disappearing from St Catherine’s Park in Lucan, west Dublin on Monday 14 May. She was found dead three days later after a large garda search.

A 13-year-old boy has since been remanded in custody after appearing in court charged with her murder.

At her funeral today, a number of buses were put on to bring school friends and other children to the resting place in west Dublin.

Pink was the predominant colour on display among the mourners with many wearing bright floral dresses to match the summer conditions.

Ana had loved dance and was a member of theatre school Dance LA  in her local Leixlip.

Girls from the school formed a guard of honour for Ana’s coffin wearing Dance LA’s colours, an all-black uniform with white and red bandanas.

Padraic Cawley of the Institute of Civil Funerals was chief celebrant at the funeral with family friend Catherine Murphy TD among those who spoke.

Ana was adopted from Russia in 2006 by her French-Irish parents.

Cawley made reference to the James Bond film ‘From Russia with Love’ as he spoke to mourners, saying this is exactly what Ana brought to her family and friends.

It has been requested by the family that any donations at the funeral be made to the Russian Irish Adoption Group.

Two books of condolences were opened by South Dublin County Council last week for members of the public to share their compassion following her death.
